Letter to CDO Hub Members 2024
The role of the Chief Data Officer (CDO) is at an inflection point. In my annual letter to you, our CDO hub members, I want to share my perspective on this pivotal moment, along with my huge thanks for your continued involvement and contribution in this brilliant data community.
The past
Initially focused on data governance and compliance, the CDO’s responsibilities have expanded over the years to include definition and ownership of the overall data strategy, insights, innovation, and ultimately value creation. Together this group has contributed to this evolution through the discussions we’ve had and the actions we’ve all taken to try and make that happen across organisations.
The present
Many of you have faced hurdles through this evolution, like poor alignment with business goals, lack of trust, siloed mentality, insufficient focus on business opportunities, being one or two steps removed from the decision making, a lack of buy in from the organisation and many others. Some of these challenges are the job of the CDO to resolve, and some require collaboration and shared responsibility with peers and other leaders.
With the massive increase in interest in AI in the Boardroom, driven by the magical abilities of GenerativeAI, this last year has seen this challenge morph and twist in unexpected ways. This is something different. This is a productivity tool, a platform to change digital customer experiences, its functionality embedded in line of business applications. In some ways it’s ‘just’ technology and it doesn’t necessarily need your own data to get real value. But it is AI. So, should you, the CDO, be in charge? Well, it’s not black and white, and it has confused the picture somewhat.
The future
For me, this all creates wonderful opportunities for CDOs to redefine their roles and deliver strategic value from data and AI. You have the chance to leverage your data assets, in partnership with AI to transform business processes, enhance decision-making, and drive innovation. This requires a shift. This is the inflection point.
Moving from traditional data strategy and management to a more integrated approach that combines data, digital and AI. Removing the shackles of what is often seen as a supporting role to the business, to a front of house owner and enabler of value.
This requires trust and alignment with other leaders. This involves making data everyone’s business, ensuring the leadership are champions, and aligning investments tightly with business goals. This requires an agile, innovative and collaborative culture alongside educated and informed teams.
For CDOs to drive long-term value, you need to adopt a forward-looking mindset. And we can learn lessons from other senior leadership positions that have also evolved their value proposition – the Chief Finance Officer once journeyed from steward of budgets and bookkeeping to the CEO’s strategic partner. The Chief Marketing Officer from brand ambassador to the architect of customer growth and loyalty, manoeuvring and solidifying their strategic role in many organisations. The overlapping remits of the Chief Digital, Technology and Information Officer. There is much to from the experiences of other senior leadership positions, and we should.
So, as we move into 2025, I am buoyant and excited about the possibilities for the CDO and importantly, our CDO hub members. We get a chance to shape what happens next, and then make it happen. Discuss it. Learn together. Share experiences, and make the job more fulfilling in the process. The Cynozure team will be there through for you throughout the year providing thought leadership, case studies, coaching, collaboration, networking and learning opportunities.
Happy holidays
Finally, thank you for your contributions to this group this year. The CDO hub has and always will be a platform that aims to set the standard of what world class data leadership looks like, and you are at the heart of making that possible.
Best wishes,
Jason Foster, Founder & CEO at Cynozure
